History

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers were founded in 2001 as the American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Islanders. The team colors are navy blue and orange, as the logo is a tiger head predominantly in orange. The color of the tiger's head was recently changed from a lighter blue on August 8th, 2006. They play at the Bridgeport Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They have been fairly successful during their time in the AHL, even making the Calder Cup Finals during their first season, losing to the Chicago Wolves four games to one. They were coached by former Islanders head coach Steve Stirling for their first two seasons, and have produced Islanders mainstays Trent Hunter, Rick DiPietro, Chris Campoli, and Sean Bergenheim. Other successful NHLers bred in the Bridgeport organization include Raffi Torres (Oilers), Jeff Hamilton (Blackhawks), and Mattias Weinhandl (Wild).
