History
| Issued over a three year span, these coins are highly prized collectibles, and are extremely popular among numismatists of all age and skill levels. This coin followed the CoronetLargeCents coins and preceded the IndianHeadCents. These coins were made of copper and nickel. 1856 This is the debut year for this coin, and is an extremely rare issue. Coins in "good" condition can pull in several thousand dollars, while a coin in high grade condition may sell for up to $200,000.
1857 Produced in much higher quantity than its 1856 counterpart, this coin can typically be purchased at a fairly reasonable level in low grade conditions.
1858 This coin can be found in LARGE LETTER and SMALL LETTER variations, though the mintage and price appears to be about the same for each coin. There is an 1858/7 version which typically sells for about 3x the regular 1858 issues.
