Three-Fingers
When Brown was little, he was working on a farm, and lost 2 of his fingers due to a machinery accident.
With the Cubs
Brown was brought up to the Majors at the age of 26. He was brought up after a spectacular season in the MinorLeagues. Due to him only having three fingers, he threw what is know called a SplitFingerFastball. He was most productive from 1904 to 1912. During this strech he won 186 games. He won 20 games or more 6 times, and pitched in 2 WorldSeries. In a Pennant-deciding game against the NewYorkGiants in 1908, ChristyMathewson pitched against the Cubs Jack Pfeister. Pfeister got off to a bad start and was taken out and Brown was put in. He didn't allow any runs for the time he was in, and the Cubs won 4-2. The Cubs went on the win the Championship. Brown finished his career with 239 wins in only 13 seasons.
Fun Fact
He was mentioned in the 17th episode of the third season of the Fox hit T.V. show The Simpsons. |
