NHL Entry Draft
.
SummaryNHL Entry Draft Information

The NHL entry draft is the NHL's means of distributing amateur players throughout the member clubs. Prior to the draft being instituted, it was common for NHL teams to sponsor minor league teams in order to obtain the rights to players developed through their systems. The draft was a way to give each team an equal chance at obtaining the top young talent entering the league.

The drafting order is based on reverse order of finish in the regular season the previous year. After the OttawaSenators were suspected of throwing the season in order to draft AlexandreDaigle, a lottery was instituted giving the bottom 4 teams in the league the chance at the top pick, in the hopes of eliminating any more of these types of situations.

At the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in Columbus, the ChicagoBlackhawks made PatrickKane of the LondonKnights (OHL) the first overall selection. The PhiladelphiaFlyers selected JamesvanRiemsdyk second overall, and KyleTurris went 3rd to the Phoenix Coyotes.
