Phil Kessel was projected to be the top pick in the 2006 NHLEntryDraft as early as the 2005 WJHC, when he made his debut with the American team. Unfortunately, when you are on top early, everyone has plenty of time to look for any possible flaws you might have. The season Kessel had immediately preceding his draft year was not spectacular and he slipped to the 5th overall pick of the BostonBruins. In the summer of 2006, Kessel decided to forego the remainder of his NCAA career, and signed with the Bruins.

Kessel made the Bruins out of training camp, and in his first 5 games he has contributed 2 assists. He scored his first NHL goal on October 21, 2006 in a loss against the BuffaloSabres.
