SummaryPlayer Collectors - dedicated obssessives

Player collecting seems like a fairly simple concept. Trying to collect all of a player's cards. There are many variations on player collecting. The true obsessives chase everything featuring their player, going so far as to include cards in which their player is featured in the action shot (sometimes known as Cameos). Other player collectors chase after cards with a print run of more than 5 or 10, or everything except 1/1 cards. Collecting only MemorabiliaCards or AutographCards is another variation. After a player is chosen, it is basically up to the collector to define the parameters of their collection.

Superstar players are the obvious choice for a player collection, but then the competition is increased, and so is the cost. Since many present day superstars have well over a thousand cards, the process can be daunting at the start. Of course, if the collection starts when the player's career does, then the task becomes more manageable. There are many dedicated player collectors for the lesser lights of the sporting world as well. Some collectors focus on minor league players, players who hail from a certain area, or who played in a certain organization. Player collecting is flexible enough to have appeal to a broad range of tastes and budgets.

A good source for player checklists is the My Collections feature on Beckett - http://www.beckett.com/myBeckett/index1.asp Once a complete checklist of the player's cards is obtained, it is easy to determine how much progress has been made, and what cards to target in the future.

Some player collectors also consider the first one made, the last one made and a significant number like a pro or college jersey number a 1/1.

Not because it is a "true" 1/1, but because it represents something special in their eyes as a collector and they will usually sell for a premium. Some people call this an eBay 1/1 because sellers realize that some look for these special numbering.
