History
| Tobacco cards are trade cards featuring a large variety of subjects issued in packages of tobacco and cigarettes. The original purpose of the tobacco card was to stiffen cigarette packs. Designs and advertising began to appear on these stiffeners and the tobacco card was born. It is thought the first tobacco card was issued in 1879 and featured the Marquis of Lorne. Tobacco cards were issued in many countries around the World. From the U.S. to the U.K. and countries like India, China, Cuba, Canada and Germany. Tobacco cards flourished in the U.S. from approximately 1879 to about 1917 or the start of the first World War. The occasional tobacco card set was issued in the U.S. after this period such as the 1952-55 Red Man tobacco sets. Tobacco cards lasted longer in the U.K. Cigarette cards featuring movie stars and football (soccer) stars were very popular during the 1930's and up until the second World War.
