Dion Phaneuf is a hard hitting defenseman for the CalgaryFlames. He played junior hockey in the WesternHockeyLeague for the RedDeerRebels, and also twice suited up for Team Canada at the WorldJuniorHockeyChampionships, winning silver and gold medals. At the 2004 WJHC, Phaneuf made an impression by demolishing RostislavOlesz with a clean open-ice check. He laid out MarcAntoinePouliot with a similar check at the 2003 CHL Top Prospects game. In 2005, Phaneuf teamed up with SheaWeber at the WJHC to form one of the most imposing pairings of junior defensemen possible. Patrolling the blue line for the CalgaryFlames has done nothing to limit this big young defenseman's talents.
