Evgeni Malkin was the 2nd overall pick in the 2004 NHLEntryDraft by the PittsburghPenguins. He was the centre of much intrigue and interest during the summer of 2006 as he was involved in a long drama based on where he would play in the 2006-2007 season. He went back and forth several times before abandoning his RHL team and showing up in North America with the intention of signing a contract and playing for the Penguins.

Malkin is the most highly anticipated rookie of the 2006-2007 NHL season. He was widely considered the most talented player not in the NationalHockeyLeague, and now he is joining a young Penguins team featuring SidneyCrosby. As long as Malkin agrees to a contract and can play for the Penguins, he is considered a forerunner for the Calder Trophy in 2007.

Malkin made his NationalHockeyLeague debut against the NewJerseyDevils after suffering a shoulder injury during a pre-season game. He scored his first NHL goal in his first game against MartinBrodeur.

Malkin's first NHL rookie card appeared in 2006 Upper Deck Black Diamond Hockey.
