The National is an annual card show that has grown from a small hotel ballroom card show, to the show/trade show/mega-event it is today. First staged in 1980, The National rotates venues on a yearly basis, usually in either California or in the Midwest.

The National may have "jumped-the-shark" in 1991, when 100,000 collectors attended the 12th National in Anaheim, California. By comparison, the 1999 National in Atlanta could barely draw a quarter of that. Attendance has remained in the 30,000-35,000 range ever since.
